Review: Elseworlds (Part 3)

The finale of Elseworlds (2018) challenges the heroes with a test that may define their ultimate destinies. The mad doctor (Jeremy Davies) has rewired the universe, changing not only everyone on Earth 1, but himself into the ultimate force to ensure victory, Superman (Tyler Hoechlin, pulling double duty as both hero and villain). Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Barry (Grant Gustin) are fugitives while Kara (Melissa Benoist) is a prisoner by a now evil-flipped version of all their allies. While working to find a way to set all things right, the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) continues to express that this is a test for a far crueler crisis to be faced in time.

More focused on the main characters, part 3 shows how Barry and Oliver’s adventure has shaped them possibly for the better. While Kara has good moments with her sister, Alex, (Chyler Leigh), Supergirl’s impact on the tale is not as specified. She’s the only main character of the three who never has a greater revelation that can improve her drive at being a hero. This feels like a wasted arc, especially since there’s a throwaway concept that she’s an anomaly in the book that foretells all reality. Ultimately, Oliver and Barry come out of their chaotic odyssey with a deeper respect for the other’s path and in their own, with Green Arrow possibly making arrangements to ensure they’re all ready for the crisis to come. A deal that may be more than necessary as Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) warns Oliver that the Doctor’s next-door cellmate (Bob Frazer) may be turning some dangerous plans in motion for the multiverse.

9 out of 10 (Despite not utilizing Kara in the same way as Oliver or Barry expand on her own path of heroism, the three are phenomenal together. The action is intense and there’s already big plans to conduct one of the most iconic stories in comic books, Crisis on Infinite Earths).
